CALL FOR ARTISTS

VIRTUAL ARTIST SERIES - 2 MONTH RESIDENCY ON OUR WEBSITE

Beginning in MARCH 2026, the Museum of Addiction and Recovery will launch an ongoing Virtual Artist Series, showcasing a rotating selection of artists whose work explores themes of addiction, recovery, and healing. Each artist will be featured for two months on our website, with their work prominently promoted across our social media platforms, various other marketing avenues, and partner networks. We welcome submissions from artists working in all mediums whose practice engages with the lived experience or broader social impact of addiction and recovery, including alcohol use disorder, substance use disorder, gambling addiction, eating disorders, codependency, and behavioral addictions. This initiative aims to highlight diverse, authentic voices that challenge stigma and demonstrate the transformative power of recovery through art.

Artist Submission Criteria:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

  • Artwork must engage with themes of addiction and recovery (any form, medium, or perspective).

  • Submit a short artist story or statement (approximately 200–300 words) outlining your connection to the subject.

  • Provide 3 examples of your artwork (high-quality digital images only).

    • Format: JPEG or PNG

    • File size: Up to 10MB per image

    • Include title, medium, and dimensions with each image.

  • Artists may work in any medium (painting, photography, sculpture, digital art, mixed media, textiles, performance, etc.) as long as the work can be clearly documented in digital format.

  • At this time, we offer a $500 (CAN) honorarium, for selected artists and they will receive extensive visibility and promotional support through the Museum’s digital platforms and community outreach.

Ways to Work with Us

Treatment Centres & Rehab Programs

MAR partners with addiction treatment centres to showcase the artistic expressions of individuals in recovery. We typically work alongside your staff, often an art therapist or program coordinator, to curate an exhibition of your clients’ artwork. We take care of everything else: securing sponsorships, finding a venue, handling logistics, and executing the show. Your clients provide the art, and we bring the museum expertise to ensure their work is seen, valued, and celebrated.

We recognize that every treatment center has different resources, and we aim to make our exhibitions as accessible as possible. While MoAR actively seeks sponsorship and funding to support these projects, we ask that participating treatment centers contribute some level of financial support to help cover essential costs. This ensures we can bring your clients’ work to the public in a professional, impactful way. We’re happy to discuss what that could look like based on your budget and needs!

Museums

We collaborate with museums to uncover addiction-related narratives within their existing collections, highlighting the intersections between substance use, recovery, and broader social and historical contexts. MAR can help your institution curate exhibitions that challenge stigma, amplify lived experiences, and engage audiences in critical conversations about addiction and healing. Whether it’s a full-scale exhibition or a special feature woven into your museum’s catalog, we bring the curatorial expertise to develop compelling, research-driven storytelling that resonates.

Art Galleries

If you have a gallery space and are interested in hosting a powerful and unique exhibition, we’d love to collaborate! MoAR works closely with galleries to develop immersive, thought-provoking exhibitions that center addiction, recovery, and lived experience through visual art. Let’s create something magical together.
